Planning Your Safari

Why should I choose Tanzania for a safari?

Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Zanzibar. It offers exceptional wildlife, dramatic landscapes and rich cultural experiences.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination. June to October is ideal for dry-season wildlife viewing, while December to March is excellent for the wildebeest calving season in Ndutu and Southern Serengeti.

Can Key Safaris create a tailor-made itinerary?

Yes. We tailor every safari around your travel dates, group size, interests, preferred accommodation level and budget.

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?

A three- to five-day safari is ideal for experiencing the Northern Circuit highlights. For a more relaxed pace or to include Zanzibar, we recommend seven days or more.

Can I combine a safari with a Zanzibar beach holiday?

Absolutely. A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday is one of the best ways to combine adventure and relaxation. We can arrange domestic flights, accommodation and all transfers.

Is Tanzania suitable for first-time safari travellers?

Yes. Tanzania is an excellent destination for first-time safari travellers. Our team plans every detail and your professional guide will be with you throughout your journey.

Wildlife and Destinations

What wildlife can I expect to see?

You may see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino—along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, primates and abundant birdlife.

Where can I see the Big Five in Tanzania?

Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the best chances to see the Big Five in a short time. Serengeti National Park and Tarangire National Park also provide outstanding wildlife viewing.

When can I see the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The migration moves throughout the Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall. Mara River crossings are generally seen from July to October, while the calving season takes place in Ndutu from around December to March.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

Wild animals move freely in their natural environment, so no sighting can be guaranteed. However, our experienced driver-guides use their local knowledge to give you the best possible wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Which destinations are best for families?

Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and selected areas of Serengeti are excellent for families. We can recommend family-friendly accommodation and create a comfortable itinerary for all ages.

Can I include cultural experiences in my safari?

Yes. We can include meaningful cultural visits with local communities, such as Maasai villages, coffee experiences around Arusha or Karatu, and cultural activities around Lake Eyasi.

Accommodation and Safari Experience

What type of accommodation do you offer?

We offer carefully selected budget, mid-range, comfort and luxury lodges, tented camps and beach hotels. Your accommodation is chosen to suit your travel style and itinerary.

Will I have a private safari vehicle?

Yes. Our safaris use private 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, allowing you to enjoy game viewing and photography in comfort.

Who will be my guide?

You will travel with a professional, English-speaking Tanzanian driver-guide. Your guide knows the parks, wildlife behaviour, road conditions and the best locations for game viewing.

What is the food like on safari?

Most lodges and camps offer a combination of international and local cuisine. Picnic lunches are provided on longer game-drive days, and dietary requirements can be arranged in advance.

Is there electricity or charging in the safari vehicle?

Yes. Our safari vehicles are equipped with charging sockets, and most lodges and camps have power available for charging phones and cameras.

What should I pack for a safari?

Pack light, comfortable clothing in neutral colours, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for cool mornings and evenings, personal medication and a camera or binoculars if you wish.

Booking and Travel Information

What is included in a Key Safaris package?

Inclusions vary by itinerary, but most packages include accommodation, meals as stated, a private safari vehicle, a professional driver-guide, park fees, mineral water and airport or hotel transfers.

What is not included in the safari price?

International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, personal expenses and optional activities are usually excluded. Your quotation will clearly show all inclusions and exclusions.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Most international visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. Visa requirements depend on your nationality, so we recommend checking with the relevant Tanzanian embassy or official immigration channels before travelling.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all travellers. It should cover medical expenses, cancellations, emergency evacuation and personal belongings.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least six to twelve months in advance, especially for travel during peak seasons, the Great Migration period and the Christmas and New Year holidays.
